Becoming an international lawyer, by Gibson Dunn

Gibson Dunn's international practice

Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher is a global firm with 18 offices worldwide.  In addition to the nine within the United States, we have nine in the global financial and legal centers of Beijing, Brussels, Dubai, Hong Kong, London, Munich, Paris, São Paulo and Singapore.

Our non-U.S. locations are fully integrated within our firm.  All of our offices are managed, operated and evaluated as part of a single enterprise, with an emphasis on sharing expertise and personnel in the best interests of our clients.  A particular strength of Gibson Dunn is our ability to integrate our practitioners and practice areas, so that we operate as “one firm,” with many offices covering key cities throughout the world.  We pride ourselves on being able to deliver, rapidly and efficiently, the full range of skills, services and multijurisdictional capabilities represented by our lawyers to our clients no matter where their needs and interests arise.

Nor have our non-U.S. offices been hastily acquired or created.  At Gibson Dunn, growth is accomplished deliberately, with a focus on maintaining our culture and outstanding client service.  We put quality ahead of scale, believing our greatest value to be not in numbers, but in effectiveness in meeting our clients’ needs.  We open and develop new offices without merging with or acquiring other firms, and relocate lawyers who are familiar with our practice and culture to work with carefully selected individuals in new locations and practice groups.

Because we operate as a single, unified law firm, our lawyers work together seamlessly across offices and countries.  This offers our associates unique opportunities to work with colleagues on matters that cross borders, disciplines, cultures and languages.

Below we briefly detail, by region, our non-U.S. locations.

Europe

Gibson Dunn has locations in Brussels, London, Munich and Paris.  Our Paris and London offices have been open since 1967 and 1979, respectively.  The Munich office opened in 2002 and Brussels in 2003.  The European team consists of a highly experienced, internationally networked group of lawyers with U.S., English, French, German, Belgian, Hungarian, Irish, Canadian and Spanish qualifications; many of them are dual-qualified.

Paris

When Gibson Dunn decided to expand outside the United States, the first international office was established in Paris.  Today, our Paris presence consists of a dynamic team of lawyers who are either dual- or triple-qualified, having trained in both France and abroad.  The office specializes primarily in complex corporate transactions, including M&A, joint ventures, asset and investment management, public offerings, and financings.  We represent many private equity houses and multinational firms in both domestic and cross-border, and public and private transactions, including acquisitions of distressed companies.  Other capabilities include: tax; public law; restructuring/insolvency; litigation; and labor and employment.

London

Our London officeoffers full-service English as well as U.S. law capabilities on a wide range of business issues to internationally listed companies, large private companies, investment banks, private equity firms, start-up ventures and many other organizations with international operations and ambitions.  Major London practice groups include: corporate/M&A; private equity; dispute resolution; international arbitration; competition/antitrust; finance (real estate, acquisition and project finance); business restructuring and reorganization; capital markets; labor and employment; commercial real estate and real estate private equity; and tax.

Munich

Our Munich office provides the high-quality legal services needed to navigate Europe’s largest economy.  Our clients are German national as well as international blue-chip corporations, mid-sized companies and investment banks, as well as private equity, venture capital and real estate investors.  The office also advises significant high-tech and emerging technology companies.  We have extensive experience as well advising clients in Russia and other Eastern European countries.  The Munich team of locally and dual-qualified lawyers offers a full range of legal capabilities including: antitrust/competition; compliance; corporate/M&A; data privacy; dispute resolution; employment law; finance/restructuring; joint ventures; private equity; real estate; and tax.

Brussels

The Brussels office is the hub of our competition law practice in Europe.  Our lawyers have unsurpassed government experience in the Brussels legal environment and a proven record of coordinating even the most difficult EU/U.S. merger filings and cartel investigations with private litigation aspects.  They have significant experience in the consumer goods, e-commerce, financial services, energy, aviation, security and pharmaceutical sectors, and play a leading role in advising both major market actors and regulators across the European Union in the communications sector on the processes of market definition and market analysis made in accordance with competition rules.

Asia

Gibson Dunn’s offices are in the financial centers of Beijing, Hong Kong and Singapore.  Our Asia practice capabilities include U.S. (including New York and California), English, Hong Kong, Singapore and Indian law.

Beijing

Established in early 2013, our Beijing office has continued to serve the needs of our offshore clients doing business in China and those of our Chinese clients in their international transactions.  Gibson Dunn lawyers have more than three decades of experience with investment, finance, capital markets, M&A, and infrastructure matters in China, and the firm or its lawyers were involved in many first-of-its-kind transactions in the country.  We also advise offshore companies on compliance matters in China, and Chinese companies on U.S. and other international anti-corruption and related compliance matters.  We assist our clients in China with litigation matters through our international arbitration and dispute resolution practices.  The Beijing office works closely with Hong Kong to provide Hong Kong law capability where relevant.

Hong Kong

Our Hong Kong office opened in 2010, expanding our existing Asian presence and our ability to serve clients wherever they need us.  The office provides an extensive range of U.S., Hong Kong and English legal advice to global and Asia-based clients, with a focus on cross-border transactions as well as corporate compliance, regulation and investigations.  Transactional matters handled include: M&A; public company takeovers and privatizations; capital markets; joint ventures; private equity; and international corporate finance.

Singapore

The opening of our Singapore location in 2008 expanded Gibson Dunn’s geographical reach to important markets in Asia.  The office’s areas of focus include: cross-border M&A; restructurings; energy and infrastructure; banking and finance (including project finance); and private equity and capital markets transactions.  Our lawyers have advised clients in Bangladesh, Brunei, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, and certain African countries.

Middle East

Dubai

Gibson Dunn has long advised leading Middle Eastern institutions, companies, financial sponsors, sovereign wealth funds, sovereigns, and merchant families on their global and regional transactions and disputes.  The Dubai office opened in 2007 to serve our strong existing client base, solidifying our presence in the region.  From this location we serve the entire Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region.  Practice areas include: regional and outbound M&A, private equity and other investment transactions, including fund formation; regional and global finance (including Shari’ah-compliant finance); capital markets; project finance; infrastructure development, financing, construction and operation; real estate investments; commercial dispute resolution (including litigation and international arbitration); tax issues applicable to U.S. and European investments; capital markets; and regulatory/compliance matters.

Latin America

São Paulo

Gibson Dunn opened the São Paulo office in 2009 as need arose from our clients for sophisticated, on-the-ground legal representation in the region.  However, our lawyers have been active in Latin America for more than four decades, advising a wide variety of Latin American, North American and European clients in diverse transactions throughout the region.  We offer multi-language capabilities in English, Spanish and Portuguese.  Latin America team members are experienced in these and other areas of practice: M&A; private equity; capital markets; project finance; bank finance and secured transactions; fund formation; international arbitration; and anti-corruption compliance.
