Lateral Look: Goulston & Storrs

Goulston's illustrious real estate practice has long made it something of a Boston big-shot – but rest assured, there’s more to this Storry...

Goulston & Storrs Lateral Profile 2024

Long a staple in the Boston BigLaw stable – over 100 years to be exact – Goulston & Storrs has picked up a reputation for its litigation, private client, corporate, and most significantly, real estate practices. Despite its presence across the East Coast with offices in New York and DC, Goulston is still very much a Boston native, and its focus on the city was a big draw for the associates we spoke with. “You get that mid-law feeling at a BigLaw firm,” one mused;especially given the firm’s lean staffing model, which has led to what associates considered a good amount of facetime and experience working directly with partners.

The view from the firm: In early 2021, we began to reimagine our approach to advancing diversity and inclusion at Goulston & Storrs. Our recently developed strategic plan for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Ownership articulates specific, attainable, and measurable goals and strategies to increase the number of attorneys from underrepresented groups (AURGs), to support those attorneys as their careers advance, and to create an environment wherein legal talents flourish.

For example, to increase the number of attorneys from underrepresented groups, we will expand our recruiting relationships to include law schools with higher percentages of students from underrepresented groups. To retain and strengthen career development support, we will reimagine internal programs such as our Executive Committee Liaison program to ground relationship-building and increase visibility for AURGs. To ensure equitable results in our decision-making processes, we will continue to provide specific instruction on mitigating the operation of bias in decision-making processes. We are happy to say that we continue to achieve Mansfield Rule Plus Certification and receive 100% on the Corporate Equality Index.

 Sustainability & CSR

The view from the firm: At Goulston & Storrs, our commitment to sustainability is not a new initiative – it’s second nature. For decades, we have advised businesses involved in shaping the built environment, which is responsible for most of the energy consumption in the United States. Increasingly, our clients engage us to help them advance their business plans in environmentally responsible ways.

As government policy and regulations in this area rapidly evolve, Goulston & Storrs closely monitors, contributes to, and helps clients comply with these changes. From forming green technology ventures and accessing renewable energy tax credits, to writing green leases and complying with green building mandates, Goulston & Storrs assists clients across all business sectors in achieving their sustainable business strategies. In addition, several of our Green Business attorneys are LEED Accredited Professionals and one of the members of the group is a Registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Goulston & Storrs is committed to being 'green'. We were an active participant in Governor Deval Patrick's Clean Energy Challenge. On a National basis, we serve as counsel to the Council for Energy Friendly Affordable Housing, and one of our attorneys is Co-Chair of the Green/Energy Committee of the National Leased Housing Association.
