Lateral Look: Greenberg Traurig

Step aside Pitbull; this Miami-born star is vying for international status as it takes its real estate prowess worldwide.

Greenberg Traurig Lateral Profile 2025

Miami seemingly produces a number of international superstars – think Sean Kingston, Enrique Iglesias, and Mr. Worldwide himself. It is nicknamed the Magic City after all. In the BigLaw circles, however, it’s Miami’s very own Greenberg Traurig who’s made it big. From humble beginnings in the 305, today’s GT is made up of 15 overseas bases, on top of a stateside footprint of 35 offices. “It’s the biggest player in Florida,” one insider doubled down on the firm’s sheer size. Aside from the juicy deals this expansive network offers (and, of course, the bragging rights), associates considered the firm’s multi-city presence a huge advantage for development. “The ability to move to another location was a practical consideration,” noted one, “I can grow and develop at one firm, no matter where I am.”

The view from the firm: Greenberg Traurig provides a variety of learning and professional development programs to build legal knowledge, strengthen professional skills, and empower our attorneys to make strategic legal decisions that work for them. Our development programs enhance the skills and competencies our attorneys need at each step of their career, while supporting attorneys so they can thrive in their work, in their client relationships, and as part of our community. We focus on two critical components of development: (1) growth and advancement around a set of core competencies and (2) cultural freedom to leverage unique talents.

The view from the firm: At GT, our credo is simple—we are one firm, one culture, one people. Our clients come from all walks of life, as do we. We believe that our lawyers’ obligation to the community is broader than just the legal work we do and that our lawyers have a professional responsibility to contribute their time and skill to provide legal services to those who do not have access to lawyers or otherwise cannot afford legal representation. As such, to effect change and incentivize participation, the firm continues its commitment to Pro Bono, requiring 25 hours of mandatory pro bono work and crediting up to 100 hours of pro bono work, recognizing up to 75 hours of credit on community, civic, inclusion, and belonging activities. The combined total amount of eligible credit for these three areas is now 175 hours.

 Sustainability & CSR

The view from the firm: GT office purchases "green" (recyclable, reusable, non-toxic, biodegradable and made from 100% post-consumer recycled materials) supplies and materials. When reviewing comparable products, GT will choose the more environmentally friendly option. As may be required, the firm’s local offices comply with local regulations regarding sustainability or “green” practices, as well as those noted, when appropriate and feasible. We recycle consumables, reduce waste and practice energy reduction when possible.

With regard to transportation, we encourage carpooling, public transportation and alternative modes of transportation, and subsidize public transportation for employees. We regularly utilize teleconference, video conference, WebEx and GoTo Meeting services. We also minimize environmental costs associated with shipping by consolidating deliveries and utilizing electronic communications and electronic transfer of documents, including email, fax and portable document format (PDF).

Local offices routinely participate in sustainability (volunteer and required) programs sponsored by the buildings in which they are located; market-specific organizations and non-profits; and local special programs.

GT is proud to have a practice dedicated to Green Building & Sustainable Development, which assists clients with green and sustainable building matters.

Additionally, our offices are net carbon neutral with respect to the firm’s global office energy usage, and are 100% powered by renewable energy. To reach this milestone, we entered into a long-term transaction for the purchase of renewable energy certificates or “RECs”, and associated compliance premiums, from a new wind farm and a new solar project.

The Center for Resource Solutions (CRS), a trusted non-profit, has certified the firm’s RECs through its Green-e® Energy program, the nation’s leading renewable energy certification. In addition, CRS has certified that our North American offices are powered by 100% renewable energy. Our status benefits not only our planet but is also of direct benefit to many of our clients.  GT requires regular electricity usage reporting by all offices and conducts an annual internal power usage audit.

As clients implement their sustainability initiatives, they turn to look at the emissions in their supply chain. Greenberg Traurig as a legal service provider, is a part of that supply chain. Therefore, our global net-carbon neutrality with respect to office energy usage could allow clients to directly report reduced carbon emissions from within their supply chain.
